Austin Transportation (Coding it Forward) | Internship
In the summer of 2023, I was a UX/UI fellow with Coding it Forward, a nonprofit that pairs early technologists with local, state, and federal government to drive innovation in public-interest technology. I worked with the Data & Technology Services (DTS) team of Austin, Texas’s Transportation Department, working on tools that enhance data processing for serious and fatal crash data analysis & increased government transparency
A web portal that displays government mobility construction projects to residents for increased government transparency.
My impact: Supported by user research and feedback, I improved the design’s usability and created interaction prototypes to hand off to developers. I also developed a usability testing plan and recruiting form to facilitate future usability testing.
Vision Zero Editor is a web portal that displays government mobility construction projects to residents for increased government transparency. VZE is DTS’s data processing and analysis platform for serious and fatal car crash data to help strategize traffic intervention methods.
Vision Zero Editor crash page and location page had many usability issues. Not much user research was done before developing the platform—it was a fast effort for an urgent need. More user research to understand the actual workflow of data scientists is needed.
My impact: Provided actionable insights of VZE usability issues and strategy for next step usability improvements. Lays next steps for increasing data scientist productivity in analyzing crash data, which ultimately contributes to saving more lives from car crashes.
Previously, the DTS primarily relied on its partnership with Coding it Forward for short-term design work during the summer. My contributions highlighted the value of having consistent design expertise, prompting DTS to expand its approach by partnering with local universities to access design talent year-round.
